Hope you are enjoying the warmer weather! Today students finished their Learning Goals on IRIS. Students created a Math, Literacy, and Personal goal. They also built in two strategies for how they will work to accomplish their goals. They are excited to share them with you at our first student led conferences in a few weeks. In Math we played a few different games to practice our basic facts. In Science students worked to finish their poster projects on Human Impact on Weather. Students will have one more day tomorrow to finish them. We will have a poster show on Monday. In Social Studies we wrote reflections for our Regions projects. We are excited to show you our new Demonstration of Learning board showing the process of learning we went through. A reminder that tomorrow is ORANGE AND BLACK DAY . Students are encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing orange and black. Students are not to wear costumes to school. Our Pillars of Care assembly is tomorrow at 12:30.
Although snowy and cold, we still managed to have a terrific Monday.  Students had to stay inside for both lunch recess and our break due to the windchill making the temperature feel like - 20. We took lots of movement breaks to help keep us focused and on task.  Today was the final day for presentations in Social Studies. The students were all very excited to present their work to their peers. Great job everyone! In math we utilized Mathletics to review some multiplication concepts. Our next unit will be addition and subtraction of decimals.  For health we are examining the old Willy Wonka movie and tying it into the 9 Habits of Teaching Empathy to Kids. We are looking at the habit of Ethical Code. We will have discussion and reflection over the next few days.    In Language Arts students did their spelling quizzes.  Students got new books from the library today. We will continue to work on Science projects this week. Posters will be due by the end of the w
Today we had a guest presentation from Junior Achievers. We learned about being entrepreneurs, what it takes to start and market a business, and how businesses impact our communities in positive ways. Ask your child what they learned! You can expect to see grades for our Whole Numbers unit test by early next week. The tests have been marked, but we are waiting for a few students to finish writing before I will publish the results on PowerSchool. Please have students return Swim Forms as soon as possible. They are due on November 8th. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! 
Today in math we wrote our unit test for Number Sense. In Science we continued to research for our "Human Impacts on Climate" poster project. For Social Studies we had a few more groups present their Regions Projects. We will finish the rest of the presentations on Monday. In Language Arts we did our Daily 5. We also had Music, P.E., and Ignite today. Tomorrow we have guest presenters from Junior Achievers. Reading...Give it a Shot BHS has enrolled in the Calgary Flames reading program.  Students will be bringing home tracking sheets to monitor how much they read each day.  Can you please sign the spot needed if they are reading at home?  1hr read = 1 Flames hockey card in grade 5.  Once they collect all 24, they can move onto the bonus card collection of Harvey the Hound doing funny things! We had a wonderful day at school. Today students got their new words for the week. Spelling quiz marks are up on Powerschool for you to keep updated on your Childs success. You can also find two Science assessments and a Basic Facts quiz uploaded last week. In Social Studies we practiced for our presentations. We will start them tomorrow. We also watched a Canada: Our History. Ask your child what they learned. In Math we are working through a practice test for our first unit, Number Sense. Students are working through a few questions per day, with support, to prepare for our unit test on Thursday. In Science we continued to fill in our Weather Journal. We are starting a project on Human Impacts on Weather this week. This Thursday is the Halloween Dance.
Hi Everyone! I hope everyone has had a wonderful week. Today in Social Studies students finished up their Regions Projects. We will be creating a references page and peer editing early next week. By the middle of the week we will start to present our projects. In Math we worked through a word problem as a group and with partners using a graphic organizer. We will review our first unit next week and write our unit test at the end of the week. In Language Arts we introduced our Reading Log. Students will fill in the log as they independently read a narrative novel. These will be used to create presentations on a novel of their choice. Students should come home with a Basic Facts quiz. Monday we will have a Spelling Quiz. If you would like to keep updated on your students progress and assessments please check PowerSchool.

Happy Long Weekend Everyone! Today in Math we played Multiplication Baseball to practice our basic facts. We then worked through a multi-step word problem together as a whole group. Next week we will continue to build strategies for solving word problems focused around addition, subtraction, and place value. We will have our unit test for our first unit the following week after some review days. In LA we practiced our Daily 5 with a focus on descriptive writing. Students will begin to write descriptive paragraphs for their guided drawings of scarecrows next week. In Social Studies we had our final day of research. Students used the text book to find more information on their chosen region. Students have access to their Google documents as well as the 'must, should, could' on their Google drive if they choose to work on it over the weekend. Happy Monday! Today we had our spelling tests for the week.  We have 5 spelling/word work groups in our room. They are working with grade level materials based off of a baseline assessment done at the beginning of the year.  The groups and related grade level materials are: Orange: Grade 2  Purple: Grade 3 Yellow: Grade 4 Red: Grade 5 expectations  Blue: Grade 5 expectations Your child will move up (or down) depending on our weekly spelling assessments as well as the completion and accuracy of their daily word work.  In Math we did an assessment we were asked to do by our administration that reviews material taught in grade 4. This will help us to plan our future units accordingly to meet the needs of your children. In Science we continued to talk about clouds. We went outside to see what type of cloud cover we saw. Ask your child what type of clouds there were and their prediction for what the weather will be like tomorrow. In Social Studies we
Happy Friday! Today in Social Studies we examined the last 3 physical regions of Canada in preparation for our inquiry project starting next week. In Math we utilized Mathletics to review addition with regrouping, subtracting with borrowing, and rounding numbers. For Science we learned about the 4 types of clouds, what they look like, and how clouds are predictors of weather. Following this we went outside to record the temperature utilizing thermometers and sketch clouds. Students were then asked to utilize their understanding of the types of clouds to discern what type of cloud they sketched. In PE we had a variety of stations providing student choice. At the end of the day students had 15 minutes of choice time as a reward for raiding over $70 for Terry Fox and completing their classroom fitness challenge. Students will have spelling quizzes on Monday. Monday is Picture Day.
Today in math we did some basic facts multiplication practice by playing multiplication baseball. Ask you child how to play it! Following this we did a must, should, could of addition and subtraction practice questions. We will have a quiz to check for understanding early next week. For Social Studies we did some reading comprehension on each of the physical regions of Canada. This is to prepare us to start a research project on a region that we choose next week. For practice writing we wrote a reflection on Chapter 6 from our read aloud The Lightning Thief.
