Hope everyone made it safe and sound in their travels through this winter wonderland today. Today we started our day with Ignite and then had music right after. Following that we had math. Students who were working on the Anchor Charts extension (to review or teach a subject to their classmates) presented them to the class. Following this we reviewed addition with regrouping and completed a Must, Should, Could of practice questions. For L.A. we did our Daily 5. Included in this was our spelling quiz from last week and some reflection writing on Orange Shirt Day. In Science we introduced the water cycle. For Orange Shirt Day we had Mrs. Harmony come in and do a presentation for all the Grade 5 classes. She showed us a few videos and talked to us about Residential Schools. We finished off our day by going for a community walk to show our support and advocate for survivors of Residential Schools and our First Nations communities.
Happy Friday! Students should be coming home with Rounding and Estimation quizzes.  Clothing orders are extended until Monday morning. Please send in yellow forms if you are interested.  We will have our spelling quiz on Monday morning. Spelling words are posted on the blog to practice with over the weekend.  Orange Shirt day is this Monday. Please remind your child to wear and orange shirt (clothing) in support of individuals who attended residential schools.
Today in Room 16 we compared the locations of the physical regions of Canada to the Provinces and Territories in Social Studies. In Math we had a quiz on Rounding and Estimation. Many students did very well while others still need some more practice. We will continue to work on this skill in small groups while others will move onto new challenges. In Science we watched a Bill Nye video and talked about wind in relation to weather. For Language arts we started a Terry Fox reading comprehension task. We discussed different annotation tools students could use to find important information. For today we focused on highlighting important information (looking at the questions first) and circling things we did not understand (asking questions). I am posting student progress (marks) on Powerschool throughout the year. If you would like to keep up to date with how your child is doing please take a look. If you have any questions contact the office or myself.
Hello! Tomorrow is our Terry Fox Run! It was moved from Friday, due to potential snow (yuck). Our classroom has set a goal to raise $35 dollars for cancer research. We will all wear stickers and ribbons as we run on Friday to advocate and raise awareness for the Terry Fox Foundation. Friday is our Pillars of Care assembly. Our award recipients, who have done a wonderful job showing the Pillars this month, were sent home with slips today. Congratulations! We have library tomorrow. Please remind your child to bring back any books they may have at home. Today we got our new words for this week. This Friday will be our first spelling test. Here are the  lists for this week, if you want to practice at home. We will be utilizing these words for word work all week. Students will know what group they are in. 3 weeks done! It is crazy how fast they have flown by. Tonight is Meet the Teacher. Please sign up for either the 6:00 or 6:45 time slot. There is no school tomorrow (Friday, Sept, 20th) Today we had Ignite in the morning, did our Daily 5, watched the beginning of Canada: The Story of Us in Social Studies, and helped our buddies sign in a play Mathletics.  Have a great weekend!
Another great day in grade 5! Today we started our day with the Daily 5. We are working on breaking down sentence patterns for our practice writing. In Math we utilize Mathletics to practice estimation. In PE we continued to play compound games. We have one more day left. For Science we examined between weather and climate. Ask your child what they know! In Social Studies we looked at Google Earth to get an understanding of where we live in relation to Canada and the World. We then coloured in maps of the provinces and territories. Tomorrow is meet the teacher!
Today we continued with our Daily 5 practice. That includes daily practice of writing, reading to self, reading to a partner, listening to reading, and word work. In math we worked on rounding to a specific place value. We will assess our rounding skills to see if we are ready to move on utilizing Mathletics tomorrow. In Science we introduced our unit, Weather Watch, and discussed the difference between climate and weather. We had library and PE today. We hope to see everyone on our meet the teacher Thursday evening. Please see the email for information on how to sign up.
Happy Friday! We had a very productive week in room 16. Today students completed their good copies for their letters, finished up their Pillars of Care projects, and did some place value practice on Mathletics. Today we read the book "The Invisible Boy" and reflected on how we create belonging in our school. We had a fire drill practice at 11:00 am. It went very well. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
Another fantastic day in Room 16! In Math students finished their place value activity from yesterday and worked through some independent place value practice. In Language Arts we began to write letters or emails (student choice) to ourselves at the end of the year. Today we broke down the parts of a letter/email, looked at the criteria for the task, looked at an example and examined the rubric (what does success look like?). Students were all able to write the introduction to their letter today. Students also continued to work on their Pillars of Care project. Ask them how it is going! If you have sent all of the forms back in, please do that as soon as possible.  We had PE and Library today as well.  Library books are able to go home, but need to be brought back to school each day. We will have library time every Tuesday. Books need to be brought back to school by Monday each week.
We had our first full school Ignite today! Ignite is a program that allows students to pick an activity (out of a variety offered by teachers in each classroom) for the first 30 minutes of the day. It has been tremendously successful in getting students to school on time and helping them focus on their learning for the rest of the day. Div 2 will do Ignite on Mondays and Thursdays. Students began working on an assignment to showcase their understanding of the importance of the Pillars of Care. Ask your child how what medium they are using to present their project. In Math we started looking at place value. Our learning target was to be able to answer the questions "What is place value?" Ask your child what their response was. We also had music and physical education today.
We had a great first week! Today we looked at Inside Out to discuss the Zones of Regulation. Ask your child about our class discussions. We also had an assembly today to welcome everyone back to school. Teachers were able to share their feelings on the importance of belonging. How to create belonging will be recognized as our fifth pillar this year. We finished off our day by having PE outside. Please have your child return all forms that were sent home as soon as possible. Students will not be able to access any school technology if they haven't completed their Digital Citizenship form. Have a great weekend!
Happy First Day of School! Today we played a few different games to get to know each other. We also started a math project called "Figure me Out". For Science we did a group building challenge to see who could create the tallest free standing structure out of pipe cleaners. Ask your child what one of the success and one of the challenges were while working in their group. Students should be coming home with a package of forms to be signed and returned as soon as possible.
