It was nice to get in contact with many of you today and find out how everything is going. I am sorry if I was unable to get ahold of you. Please check your email for some follow up questions regarding further information needed. You can expect to see a second email coming soon regarding Google Classrooms/Meet as well as further information about what is to come.  For this week you can continue to do the activities listed on the website.  https://sites.google.com/educbe.ca/grade5atbhs/home Thank you for your patience. Kind Regards, Mr. Mahon
Hey Everyone, I came across this cool website with ideas of how to keep kids active while at home. https://www.edmontonsport.com/live_active/active_at_home Hope everyone has a great weekend! Keep checking out the Grade 5 website for updates: https://sites.google.com/educbe.ca/grade5atbhs/home
Hi Everyone, I hope everyone is doing well and are adjusting to this strange "new normal". I just wanted to let you know that the CBE as a whole is working towards creating a plan of action to support students over the foreseeable future. I don't have any major updates as of now, but just wanted to make sure you know that I am thinking of you all and will keep you informed as I become aware. For now you can continue to utilize the grade 5 website for ideas, encourage your kids to spend time outside, help out with chores or cooking in the home (lots of rich math and literacy involved in cooking/baking), and trying to enjoy this bit of a forced break. Don't forget to keep up with the social distancing and hand washing. Here is a cool video that shows how soap can combat the spread of germs/viruses. You could even try this experiment at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvG6uBq-dV0 Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns. K
Hello Everyone, I hope everyone is doing well during the trying time. I want you to be aware that  the situation is evolving quickly with emergent directives will likely be coming from the provincial government and the CBE over the next number of days and to look in your emails for updates. Below is a list of ideas for what your child could be doing on a daily basis. For all resources and class assignments, pleaser refer to the grade 5 website. All assignments can be found here under the subject page. https://sites.google.com/educbe.ca/grade5atbhs/home Language Arts Please continue to follow the Daily 5 routine. For a complete breakdown of this, please follow the link below. Each of the Daily 5 should be done for approximately 20 minutes. https://sites.google.com/educbe.ca/grade5atbhs/la Students can continue to work on and complete their procedural writing texts. Good copies can be typed up on Google Docs (if a computer is available) and shared to me.  Math
Update: Due to concerns over Covid-19: Fun Lunch on Thursday March 19th has been cancelled. Please contact the school with any inquiries. The school dance on Thursday March 19th has also been cancelled. Finally our field trip to Aggie Days on April 1st was cancelled today by the even organizers.
We had a great day in Room 16. For LA we continue to work on procedural writing. We took our original attempt at writing a procedural writing "how to" and acted them out. It was fun, funny, and informative acting out they steps exactly as they were written. We then took this learning and created a list for what we thought good procedural writing needs. Students then chose something they want to teach their classmates. They will write a procedural writing piece about this and when we are all complete, we will teach these activities or skills to our classmates. In Math we did a math talk focused around estimation and multiplication. You can check it out here. The kids were very engaged. https://tapintoteenminds.com/3act-math/reeses/#extension3 In Social Studies the students continued to have time researching their chosen Canadian. We will begin to take this information and write some informative paragraphs soon. We also had Music, PE, Buddies, Mindfulness and Ignite.
As you know we didn't get to attend our field trip today as the event was cancelled. In Math we continued on with our work focusing on theoretical and experimental probability. Some students (as an extension) even made probability games and played them with their classmates. Ask your child what the difference between the two are. In LA we are still working on procedural writing and finishing up the last few speeches. For Health/LA watched Honey I Shrunk the Kids and broke apart the movie into our Hero's Journey Story Wheel as well as looked for our 9 Habits that Promote Empathy. Ask your child what they found. In SS we are continuing to work on our Famous Canadians research project. We are working towards creating a Heritage Minute about the person. Ask your child what Canadian they decided to do their assignment on and what the expectations for the task are. Reminders: Please remind your child the importance of washing their hands and not sharing food.
Just a quick update. Reminder that Safety Expo has been cancelled.  If you have any further questions please check your email for a School Messenger and/or contact the school.
Today was a very exciting day. We had Ignite, Music, Math, PE, Language Arts speech presentations, and an amazing guest Opera performance in the afternoon! In Math students finished up their first data assignments. That is the last amount of class time they will receive and will have to be completed when they are finished other work or at home. The task is due Thursday. We are still working our way through speeches. They will be presented over the next few days. Reminders: We have a field trip on Wednesday to Safety Expo which is help down town at City Hall and surrounding areas. Please return permission forms if you haven't already.  Grade 5 website: https://sites.google.com/educbe.ca/grade5atbhs/home
Happy Friday! This week we have continued to work on collecting first hand data, graphing our results, and analyzing the data. Students are representing all of this information utilizing a creative journal page. We will finish this work on Monday. In Social Studies we are continuing to examine life in Canada after WWII through texts and videos. We will move onto life in Canada in present time following. In Science we have finished Magnetism and will be moving into our Classroom Chemistry unit next. In Language Arts we are finishing up our narrative speeches on Monday. We will be moving into Procedural Writing next. We are just finishing up an art project focusing on Peggy's Cove. Expect to see these on our website soon! We have been working extremely hard in room 16. Sorry for the lack of blog posts in the last few days. In math we wrote our unit test for fractions and decimals. We just started a new project focusing on collecting and interpreting first hand data. Ask your child what research question they created today and who they are going to collect the data from. In science we have been finishing up magnetism. We did an experiment to find out what types of materials can be magnetized. Ask your child how it works. In Social Studies we are looking at how Canada was impacted after WWII. Students are going to start to present speeches for their reading logs tomorrow. Some students are presenting in class while others have chosen to video themselves and show that to the class. Today we started a new art project focusing on Peggy's Cove. Reminders: We are going on a field trip to Safety Expo. Students need to have permission forms returned to school as soon as possible.  *We will h
